Text Box: Curriculum Objectives for 2009-2010 School Year

Religion: (Homeroom 212) What a special year for the sixth grade as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, their initiation into full membership of the Catholic Church! While preparing for Confirmation, the students will be studying the Old Testament. The students will be encouraged to read the Bible and also use it for prayer. The students will learn more about their faith, and they will discover that faith can help them recognize their own uniqueness. They will learn how to live and share their faith. The students will be more motivated to respond to God’s call to enter into a loving relationship with Him and with the Church.

Mathematics: (Rosters Red and Green) The students will build on skills learned in the previous grades to further develop mathematical competence. Students will review and learn operations of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Students will learn and study rates, ratios, proportions, percentages, order of operations, number theory & properties, probability, and exponents. Students also will explore geometric properties and figures. Variables, expressions, and equations will be introduced and the students will learn to solve simple equations. The traditional methods of drill and practice will be implemented daily. Students will be given opportunities to explore math concepts with the use of technology, calculators, projects, and cooperative grouping activities.

Integrated Language Arts: (Roster Red) This will include reading, grammar, writing, spelling, and vocabulary. Students will read different genres from their literature books and learn reading strategies and skills along with focusing on how the genres are written in order to write their own. Students will review the writing process and apply this process to their own writing pieces of prose and poetry. All writing will be done in class with the exception of the final piece which must be typed, and this may be done at home. Students will analyze sentences by completing a Daily Language Practice (DLP) at the beginning of every class. Students will review and expand on sentence structure and the parts of speech. They will also expand their vocabulary and compose sentences using spelling/vocabulary words in context. These skills will be applied to the students’ writing pieces.

Social Studies: (Homeroom 212) We will study the major geographical regions of the Eastern Hemisphere with emphasis on basic concepts of geography. Students will explore the continents of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. Students will be given opportunities to explore these continents with the use of technology, projects, and cooperative grouping activities.
